Entrepreneur recycles discarded PPE equipment and face masks into eco-friendly bricks
Very soon there will be more masks than jellyfish in the ocean. These discarded face masks, and all the other evergreen waste that harms the planet, is a man-made concept. Simply relocating them is not going to solve the problem.
Binish Desai, , known as 'India's recycler man', dove into his home lab to come up with an ingenious solution, Brick , to address the growing demand for PPE suits and masks. Since April , he has been recycling biomedical waste, especially single-use masks, head covers and non-woven PPE equipment, into eco- bricks that are said to be environment-friendly.

His company, Eco-Eclectic Technologies, based in Gujarat, has already started commercial production in September Previously, in , Binish had developed P bricks, which were mainly made from waste paper, leftover chewing gum, some organic binders and plant extracts. The new eco- bricks are an updated version of P-bricks.
Binish's Brick contains % shredded PPE and masks, % waste paper and % specially developed binder. After following good sanitation protocols, the material is shredded, added to industrial waste paper obtained from paper mills, and then mixed with a binder. The mixture is stored for - hours before being placed in a mold. The bricks dry naturally for three days and the products are ready to use.
The new variant, Brick , is stronger and more durable, making it three times stronger than conventional bricks at twice the size and half the price. It is fireproof, recyclable and absorbs less than % water to ensure good grip of the plasters.

Safety and hygiene are paramount when handling medical waste. Binish admitted that they followed the guidelines of the Central Pollution Control Board. Waste PPE must be kept intact for hours before processing. Binish also introduced something called Eco Bins to collect waste generated in hospitals, police stations, other places where staff or people are using PPE equipment and medical grade masks.
The containers have an indication mark to show that they are full. Once full, the waste is left untouched for the next hours, and is then thoroughly disinfected and shredded at the Eco Centers.
